SUGGESTED ITINERARIES
A short distance from Piajo
Upper Bergamo, Città Alta
Enclosed within the Venetian Walls with their monumental gates, the historic center of Bergamo – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a jewel to explore at a leisurely pace, admiring each little alleyway and picturesque view. Upper Bergamo is a medieval town, without equal anywhere in northern Italy and home to many artistic and architectural treasures.
We suggest a walk along the main street, via Bartolomeo Colleoni, that the locals call “Corsarola” to Piazza Vecchia, the city’s most famous square with the Campanone Tower, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the cathedral dedicated to Saint Alexander of Bergamo, the Colleoni Chapel and the Baptistery.
Wander among the little streets and walk along the walls to admire Lower Bergamo and views extending beyond the horizon. And then, don’t miss the best of the local cuisine: Casoncelli, Scarpinocc, polenta e osei (the classic sweet), Principi delle Orobie cheese, and the famous wines – Valcalepio and Moscato di Scanzo.
